Tips and Tricks for European Train Travel

Train travel is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to explore Europe. With extensive networks connecting major cities and small towns alike, it’s a convenient option for any traveler. In this guide, I’ll share straightforward tips to help you save money, plan effectively, and make the most of your journey. Whether you’re new to European rail or looking to travel smarter, these tricks will set you up for a hassle-free adventure.

How to book?

When traveling between cities in Europe, I have found that the easiest way to book is through the Trainline app. When searching for tickets, enter your starting and ending cities along with your travel dates. The app will provide various options for travel times, stops, and even bus alternatives.

Tips & Tricks!

  1. Book in advance!! Prices increase as the travel date approaches, and tickets can sell out during busy seasons!
  2. Arrive at the station just 10–15 minutes early. Train stations in Europe don’t require security checkpoints, so all you need to do is find your train platform. Smaller stations may lack cafés or restaurants, so there’s no need to arrive too far in advance.
  3. Double-check the platform number at the station! While the Trainline app provides platform information, it’s always a good idea to confirm it on the station’s screens, because last minute changes can happen!
  4. Be sure to allow enough time between train connections! Many journeys involve one or two train changes. When using Trainline, look for options with at least 10 minutes to switch trains—delays are common, and you don’t want to risk missing your connection!
  5. Download movies and music! Many train routes pass through mountains or remote areas where service is unavailable. Having some downloaded entertainment will help the time pass more quickly. Personally, I enjoy listening to music while taking in the views!
  6. Always travel with your passport! Occasionally, police at train stations may randomly ask to see it. As long as you have your ID, there’s nothing to worry about—they are really nice!
  7. Beware of pickpocketers! Busy stations are a pickpocketers dream- make sure to have all of your belongings securely zipped up and put away!
  8. Consider a EuroRail pass: This pass offers unlimited travel within 33 European countries. These passes can seem expensive but would be worth it if you are planning to travel frequently!
